20 years as a writer!

23 years ago, I left my acting career behind to pursue a writing career. 20 years ago, I graduated the Cal State system with my creative writing degree and very little knowledge of the publishing industry. I went to numerous classes and conferences in order to learn about the industry, which in many ways, was similar to my Hollywood career. Since that time, publishing has changed immensely and writers had to adapt or get left behind. I chose to adapt.

It wasn't always easy for those of us who started out when the internet was new, before eBooks became popular and Kindle, Nook, online piracy didn't exist, and people bought books from brick and mortar stores, that are now gone. But I stayed the course, even as some of my writing colleagues quit the business.

Writing and publishing is not an easy business but Hollywood prepared me for the ups and downs and the numerous rejections. My only regret is that I didn't start this career earlier, because I absolutely love creating new worlds and characters that often surprise me and have become like family to me.

So far, I've written 14 novels, 12 of which are published, with another scheduled for release this summer. Each book takes at least a year for me to research, finish, edit, and prepare for publication, sometimes more. Still, I can't imagine doing anything else.

Meniere's Disease Warrior

It takes a lot to rattle me when it comes to my disease because it's so damned predictable. Ear fullness and loud tinnitus before an attack, vertigo during an attack, balance issues and brain fog after an attack. But this latest was as severe as the first year I had vertigo and it scared the hell out of me. If I had been living alone, instead of having a wonderful husband in the house, I would have been stranded in bed for 2 days without even being able to use a phone to call for help. As it was, I could barely make it to the bathroom by myself to puke my brains out. Thank goodness for walls and trash cans.

The attacks are supposed to get less severe as the years pass, which they have until now, so I think something else was influencing this latest one. Maybe I picked up bug when I was out among people. Maybe I'm going bilateral - I truly hope not because one bad ear ruining my life is enough. Maybe it was all the excess stress I've had the past few months. Whatever caused it, I truly hope I never have severe vertigo again. Ever. And I plan to live at least into my 80's. #meniere'swarrior

2018 is a milestone year for me

2018 is a milestone year for me in many ways. 20 years ago, I received my creative writing degree and embarked on a new career. This year marks my 14th novel completed and 13th novel published. It's the 15th anniversary of my Meniere's Disease diagnosis, which came as a relief because they suspected a brain tumor. And the best one - Hubby and I moved in together 30 years ago and kept our engagement secret for several months until we could afford to buy me a ring. You can barely see the diamond chip in that little ring but I love it and still have it. It's a reminder of our love and how far we've come in life.

Yes, I'm still here and still writing

I'm behind on blog posts simply because life seems to be in the way a lot. I've released one teen book in paperback for the first time this year and am doing re-writes on a brand new sci-fi book for adults. We're pushing for a end-of-year release on the next book, so I'll keep everyone posted. Also, I just began writing a dark fantasy novel, which is a new sub-genre for me, and one I've wanted to try my hand at for some time. That one is in the very early stages, so I don't expect it to be ready for publication for at least a year. After that, I have another paranormal fantasy series planned, along with several stand-alone novels.

Meanwhile, a few family members are having a rough year, so we're helping them out as much as we can. We're also taking lessons from Houston and Mexico and have added earthquake coverage to our insurance here in SoCal, as well as scheduled seismic upgrades for our home. We want to protect ourselves as much as possible in case "The Big One" hits in our lifetime, which experts say is a matter of when, not if. Of course, this means putting off renovations on our original 1950's bathrooms and the bad kitchen remodel previous owners did, but safety is important. We have put off traveling because our elderly pets can't be left alone for more than a few hours. Once they're gone, we plan to travel again. It's not such a big deal, since we've been to every country on our "must-see" list, but we enjoy traveling and seeing new places.

I've continued with my family tree detective work, which keeps me busy on the side. And hubby was able to take early retirement this year, which has reduced stress for both of us. He's a great helpmate and does the housework whenever I need him to, so I can get more writing done. We enjoy walking to the beach, bike riding, or going to movies or grocery store on a weekday. Outings are much more enjoyable when we're not fighting traffic and crowds. I've cut back on my writing hours so that we can spend more time together, but I will never stop writing and publishing books. I don't think I could without my head exploding. All that creative junk in my brain has to go someplace. I am interested in writing stage plays again, something I haven't done in over 20 years, but I'm too busy at the moment.

So, that's about it from my little corner of the world. This weekend, we'll be decorating our house for our favorite holiday, Halloween! And the pets need baths. Feel free to pop over to my website for info on all my books and upcoming releases. http://www.danadaviswriting.com/

City of Gods: Book Three of the Teadai Prophecies

Adelsik followed the others as they walked toward Mindona and prepared herself for what they might have to do to the errant woman. For my kin. For my sisters. I will kill if I have to. ~ From City of Gods: Book Three of the Teadai Prophecies.

Lost Moon, a new fantasy novel

Her toes were black. Infection would soon follow and Kepriah cursed under her breath. She would have to sear her feet after she severed her snow-bitten toes, and she looked around for kindling with which to start a fire. She glanced at the journal that had fallen from her pack last night, and noted the markings and numbers that represented passing days, then looked at her feet again. Happy sarding day of birth to me.

Got cousins?

Quite often, I get genealogy questions from distant cousins and online friends. While I'm not a genealogist, I have been researching my family tree for 20+ years and am happy to share information. But if you wish to compare ancestors, my best advice is to upload your tree to a website like Ancestry. Even knowing an ancestor's name, birth date and other info, it still means searching our family tree software for the names and visually comparing each individual to make certain they are a correct match. For example: I have 5000+ names in my tree and those are just my direct lines, so you can imagine the time it takes to make connections without online algorithms helping us out.
And if you can afford it, also do a DNA kit because that will help confirm your research and any family tree connections. Believe me when I tell you it's so much easier now than it was back in the day. I remember having to send a snail mail letter to each city for each ancestor just to get birth, marriage, and death information. And you had to pay for each certificate, whether or not they could locate it. Either that, or you had to get on a plane and do the footwork yourself. So get those trees online if you want family connections! Good luck and enjoy the journey, wherever it may lead!
