It's my birthday month!

Just in time for my birthday month - my award-winning novel, Superstitions, has a new low ebook price! So much has happened in the world the past couple of years that it's nice to have the company of books, isn't it? I don't know about you, but books saved my and my husband's sanity during these trying times. We're both avid readers. In fact, we met and started dating while working in Waldenbooks back in the day. For those of you not old enough to remember, Waldenbooks was a popular mall bookstore. There was no internet back then so paperbacks were our favorite go-to reads and we had a LOT of books when we finally got our first place together. We still read paperbacks and have them on our bookshelves, but we tend to read more ebooks these days. I love having multitudes of worlds on one device and my Kindle Paperwhite is my best friend. Besides hubby, of course.

Happy St Paddy's month!

I just realized I haven't posted in 2 months. We're still doing much-needed repairs on our new home and trying to get them all finished before summer so we can get back to a normal life again. With all the crazy stuff going on in the world, normal is something we crave. I'm still plugging away at the next 2 novels, which is always a challenge with the house stuff going on.

That said, it's March, which means spring will be showing off very soon and flowers are already starting to bloom around us. Plus, as a descendant of Irish immigrants, and here are a lot of us, the wearing o' the green is always a fun day! We make a fun veg version of a traditional Irish dish or dessert on St Paddy's Day. And the entire month, I focus my genealogy research on my Irish ancestors, as well as my Scottish lines, since the two intermingled quite a bit in the past. 

As a young child, my great-grandmother convinced me that a leprechaun lived in the bushes outside her house and I would spend hours looking for the little guy. I think the adults just wanted time to themselves but I loved exploring the bushes, flowers and trees on her property. She had fruit and nut trees that I could climb and I would pretend I was in a forest and make up stories in my head. A precursor to my eventual writing career, I suppose.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe celebration. We stayed in and ate popcorn, watched a movie, and played games. We are all settled in the new home now and are very happy to have warmer winters again. We're looking forward to the time when it's safe to travel abroad again. We read, stream movies, play games, and have a dedicated workout room to help us ride out these crazy times, but our last vacation was 10 years ago to The Netherlands, so we are more than ready to go someplace.

I'm plugging away at my next 2 novels and we've been doing much-needed repairs to our new home. This house is over 20 years old and we bought it in original condition so it needs some work. We love having nature trails outside our door, which helps us stay sane. Nature is the best soother, especially during stressful times, so I highly recommend getting out in nature or even a nearby park.

Living in historic times is never easy but we'll get through this eventually. Stay safe out there!

A Crazy Summer and Fall!

This has been one crazy year for us. Over the summer, we made a big decision to sell our Oregon home and move to Arizona, so that's what we've been working on the past 4 months. The perfect AZ house came on the market just as we started looking and we were lucky enough to get it. We made the big move last month and are finally settling into our new desert home. The Oregon coast is beautiful but way too cold and isolating for this Southern California couple. We're happy to be back to warmer winters and a short flight to our SoCal hometown. 

My writing has been interrupted many times the past few years with family obligations and big life changes, and I'm anxious to get back to a regular writing schedule again. I have 2 novels scheduled for release by 2023 with more to follow so I will be busy in the months ahead. I hope everyone had a nice Halloween. Stay safe!

I'm still here, just busy!

I haven't posted anything in a while but I'm still hanging in there. Now that the weather is nice, we've been finishing up some outdoor renovations and landscaping and taking full advantage of the sunshine. I'm writing 2 new novels so that's also keeping me very busy. Not sure about publication dates, yet.  

In the meantime, several of my currently published books have hit Amazon's various best seller lists. All of the books are available for purchase through Amazon and are free for KU members.

2020 is almost over!

It's been a couple of months since my last post and I hope everyone has been staying safe and sane. What a crazy year it's been! Living in historical times is never easy.

I thank all of you essential workers for putting yourselves at risk to keep the rest of us alive. To those who have lost family and friends to the plague (sadly, I personally know a few who fall into this category), my heartfelt condolences. 2020 has traumatized our entire world on one level or another and keeping each other safe is so important right now. 

I just want to wish everyone a safe and sane holiday as we move toward the new year. And may 2021 bring successful vaccines and an end to the suffering. Stay safe!

Adjusting to this crazy pandemic world

It's been a while since I posted here but as you already know, not much has changed in our pandemic world of 2020. We feel lucky to be living in a small town where we have access to the beach and hiking trails to help keep us sane and are able to distance ourselves. Like everyone these days, I miss traveling, shopping besides just picking up groceries, in-person workout classes, going to the movie theater, and other things I took for granted in the before times. We were supposed to do some indoor renos and traveling this past summer, which have been postponed indefinitely now. So we decided to update the outside, which is in desperate need of landscaping, to give ourselves a nature space for downtime without leaving our property. And I'll also have a wonderful place to write when I don't want to be in my office. So that's what we're doing over the next month.

We just try to get excited about the little things these days. Like chocolate, and the fact that it's now October, which is Halloween month. My favorite holiday! We're not sure whether trick-or-treating is cancelled in our town, yet, but we'll probably get that news soon. We plan to put a bowl of candy on the porch with a sign, if kids are allowed to go to houses this year. That way they don't need to interact with us to get a treat. I can't imagine being a kid in this pandemic craziness but they'll have a lot of stories to tell their future grandchildren, that's for sure.

The fires here on the west coast have been another trying thing for many. We're lucky we only got smoke and not fires where we live but others weren't so fortunate. 2020 is definitely testing all of us and I find getting lost in a good book even more important now, as are TV and streaming shows. I put a space together so we can do home workouts and play games. And we've done some small home updates ourselves, like painting hubby's office to brighten it up. I've been doing a lot of online writing conferences the past couple of months, which is nice because it feels like I'm at least connected to other writers, but they do get tiring after a while and I need to take breaks. Many are recorded so I can watch the panels any time, which helps.

The new normal

As much as I hate that we have a plague going on, I have to say I'm glad for some of the options that have come out of this whole disaster. Streaming Comic-Con and the San Diego Writers Festival for example. I hope they continue this option after we get back to "normal" life in the future. After being isolated for so long, I feel rejuvenated just seeing and hearing other writers, even if it's on my TV. Especially in my genre! We creatives can be very introverted but we still need connections to our own kind once in a while.

Still here, still writing

The real world seems more fiction than my novels at the moment but I'm still here. Still writing. The main character in my current novel prefers I learn about her as I write her story. The nuggets she's revealed so far are taking me on a disturbing journey into the future. And, of course, I'm loving it!

Are we living a sci-fi novel?

Living today is like being in some alternate universe in a sci-fi novel. Am I right?! I write all kinds of otherworldly books but I never thought I'd be living through a worldwide pandemic. I doubt many of us thought this would happen during our lifetime. Trying days, indeed.

Hubby and I are taking walks when weather permits and playing old Wii sport games and exercising at home when it doesn't. We binge shows and read books, but we did that before the stay at home orders. We're keeping our distance from others and only going to the store when we need supplies. To make things more stressful, my mother recently had surgery then complications from that surgery. Her last couple of days in the hospital, she wasn't allowed to have visitors due to the virus. She's home now and recovering. Thankfully!

I'm also working on my next book, which has taken longer than usual because of all the life interruptions over the past couple of years. When I'm not writing, I'm usually catching up on my family tree research. Funny, I've been watching the Outlander series and since my Frazier ancestors lived in the Carolinas during the revolutionary war, it's been extra fun seeing those scenes. I wonder if Gabaldon used my ancestors as inspiration for her characters or if that's a coincidence? Hmm...If I ever see her again, I'll have to ask her. We did book festivals together when I lived in Arizona but that was before she was a household name. She must be so excited seeing her books come to life on the screen. I know I'm enjoying the show.

Before I sign off, I would like to send out my sincere thanks to healthcare workers, first responders, grocery store workers, delivery services, and others for your hard work and commitment during this trying time. We appreciate all that you're doing to help keep the rest of us safe and stocked up on necessities. Hopefully, these trying times will be in our past sooner than later.

Missing our precious fur baby

I'm crying as I write this and haven't posted on this blog about it until now, but our precious fur baby passed away January 9th. We did everything we could to give her the best end of life care. We're heartbroken and still grieving for her. She was essentially our fur daughter and it's a shock to go from daily, scheduled care to sudden freedom. Because she had epilepsy and dementia and incontinence, she couldn't be left alone, so we did certain errands in shifts and took her with us wherever dogs were welcome.

She was a senior rescue and the vet guessed her age at the time we adopted her at 8-10 years, which meant she was about 14-16 years old when she died. The average age for a chug is 12 so we feel she beat the odds there. She seemed to be a happy dog, despite her fear-aggression to other dogs. Our trainer guessed that she was taken from her mother too soon and never socialized. For dogs, there is a window in which they need that socialization. She was our only fur baby and that was fine with her and with us, as she got and needed all the attention.

We're doing our best to live without her but it's very hard. We love you, little girl, and hope that you are running free and have many doggy friends now.

End of life care for beloved fur baby

People don't talk about it much, but end of life care for a pet sucks. Dealing with an old dog with dementia, epilepsy and other health problems is exhausting and heartbreaking. The lack of sleep, the circus acts we do to get her to eat and take her meds, the night wandering and the potty accidents. The crying - us, not her. The not writing because I'm too exhausted to hold a coherent thought and keep falling asleep at my desk. The short tempers - again us, not her. 

Thank goodness for books, TV and video games. Those distractions are the only things keeping us sane. Being a type A, who prides herself on fixing problems when they arise, these past few months have brought me to my knees. Hubby is more laid back and handles it much better, but thank goodness we have each other. And tomorrow, we'll get up after a night of interrupted sleep and do it all over again. Because we love our little fur baby, and because she deserves the best end of life care we can give her. 

If you're going through the same thing with your pet, remember you are not alone. And kudos for sticking by your fur baby when things get tough.

Been a very tough year

I'm still here. It's just that we've had a very tough year. In January, my sister-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, which meant several months of going back and forth to SoCal to help her out. Sadly, she passed away in July. Hubby hit a cougar with his car on one of the long drives to the airport. I know, right?! Even the old-timers here in Oregon were shocked. Thankfully, he's okay, but the poor cougar and his car weren't as lucky. Our elderly dog started having health problems, which is never fun, since she's part of the family. And I got hit with several Meniere's attacks from all the stress, which of course, adds to the stress. Vicious cycle.

As of today, the cremation, memorial and spreading of ashes are over, a lawyer is taking care of probate, hubby's car is fixed and runs like new again, we got the dog on a regiment that's helping her quite a bit, and I'm nearing the end of my latest Meniere's attack.

Of course, dealing with all this life stuff has put me way behind on my latest novel. It was supposed to be released for the holidays this year but we're now shooting for next summer or fall. I'll keep everyone posted on that.

We hope to go a very long time without another year like this one and are looking forward to a quiet holiday season. In fact, we're treating ourselves to some new appliances soon, since the ones that came with this house are 20-years-old and showing their age. Hey, when you've had a year like ours, the little things can make a big impact.
